Situated in the heart of the Arabian Gulf off the southern coast of Bahrain, the Hawar Archipelago have long been considered a haven for wildlife.
By far the largest island is Hawar. It is 18 km long and varies in width from 5.2 to 0.9 km. In 2002, the Bahraini government applied to have the archipelago recognised as a World Heritage Site due to their unique environment and habitat for endangered species.
Hawar Island AS-202 was announced as a NEW IOTA in July 2014, during the 50th Anniversary IOTA Convention in Windsor, UK.
